Navratri is one of the longest Festival of Gujarat. We celebrate many Festivals but Navratri has its own joy of Celebration. It is major Festival of Gujarat. Navratri means “nine nights”. People worship Goddess like Ambe Maa, Mahakali Maa, Durga Maa etc in these days with their spontaneous flow of spirituality.
In this day people do “Pooja” and also “Anushthan” for nine days. They decorate their temples in their homes and do Maha Aarti every evening. People also keep fast for nine days. During this festival people organize “Aatham’s Havan” specially in their homes and society.
Every one joins in “Garba”, a Folk dance of Gujarat. It continues almost through the night. It is very youthful dance. Young men and women join in Navratri Garba. When Garba players dance on the folk songs the atmosphere has its own charm.
The Navratri Garba takes place in open grounds which are large in size. In villages it also held’s in sheri-maholla too. People decorate and illuminate ground with tiny bulbs. The atmosphere is like a fair. Garba players form a circle in open ground and dance to the tune of a garba song with music. The music system is very energetic. In some places the number of garba players is so large, so the singer sings garba song form the stage. It is a tradition to sing the garba songs, because it worships and admires Ambe maa, Durga maa and other Goddesses. Now a day the garba songs present some social themes too.
